Pianist Seong-Jin Cho performs Bartok's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Houston Symphony, conducted by Osmo Vanska, as part of the Margaret Alkek Williams Spotlight Series.
Seong-Jin Cho returns to Jones Hall on March 19, 20, and 21, 2027, playing with the Houston Symphony. It's his first time back since his debut here in 2023, and the center of the program is Bartók's Piano Concerto No. 2, a virtuosic piece that puts the piano front and center. Cho won the 2023 International Chopin Piano Competition, so he's coming in with that kind of pedigree.
He's not the only name on the bill. Conductor Osmo Vänskä is leading the symphony, and he's a renowned Finnish interpreter of Jean Sibelius, which fits the second half of the evening: Sibelius's Symphony No. 6. The program opens with Missy Mazzoli's Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres), which is described as a sonic journey that surrounds the listener in a solar system of sound. Between the contemporary Mazzoli, the mid-century Bartók, and the Sibelius, the night covers a fair bit of ground.
