Houston-based artist Russell Willingham blends Americana storytelling with the warmth of neo-soul and R&B, leaning on vintage electric guitar tones and classic songcraft.
Russell Willingham plays McGonigel's Mucky Duck on Friday, October 16, starting at 8:30 PM. He's a Houston artist, and this is a home-city show. He'll be performing as the sole bill for the night.
His sound sits at a cross between Americana storytelling and the warmth of neo-soul and R&B, built around vintage electric guitar tones and classic songcraft. It's a mix that leans on a few distinct lineages: the soul of Sam Cooke, the atmospheric folk of Lord Huron, and the country-leaning voices of Chris Stapleton, Leon Bridges and Charley Crockett. He describes his writing as something built to feel timeless, and the influences he cites—soul, Americana, and R&B—all share that same root.
The timing of the show is worth noting. His debut album, produced by Billy Horton, comes out on September 18, 2026. Horton also worked with Charley Crockett, one of the names Willingham lists as an influence, so there's a direct line between the record's production and the sound he's been aiming for. By the time he takes the stage on October 16, the album will have been out for nearly a month, so you'll be hearing the new material as it was intended.
