Shakespeare's classic tragedy about two star-crossed lovers in Verona, performed at Alley Theatre with accessibility features including captioning and ASL interpretation.
Alley Theatre is running Romeo and Juliet through October 18, with the production playing in the Hubbard Theatre at 615 Texas Avenue. It opened on Wednesday, September 30, at 7:30 PM, following a few preview performances that started back on September 25.
It's the story you already know: two star-crossed lovers in Verona who defy the families and forces trying to keep them apart. This version is set in a timeless Verona, and the production focuses on how each generation reinvents what it means to love and risk everything for it. The Houston Chronicle called it a "tale of woe" so delightful you might want to see it again and again.
Rob Melrose directs, with Melissa Molano as Juliet, Mason Dowd as Romeo, and Elizabeth Bunch as Lady Capulet. The show runs two hours and 45 minutes, including one intermission. If you're looking for more than just the performance, the company is programming post-show Alley Chats, including one led by resident acting company member Melissa Molano. There's also a specialty cocktail called "The Classic"—a bright Italian drink made with Aperol, prosecco, and soda.

One thing that sets this production apart is how it's built for accessibility. There's a captioned performance, an audio-described show, and an ASL-interpreted performance, plus simultaneous Spanish translation on select dates. Tickets run from $36 to $108.
