A collaboration between ROCO and Opera HispƔnica where tango, dance and digital art meet in works by Astor Piazzolla and Rodolfo Zanetti.
ROCO is bringing Tango Opera to ARTECHOUSE Houston on Friday, January 22, 2027, at 7:30 PM. It's a collaboration with Opera HispƔnica, and it's built around the music of Astor Piazzolla and Rodolfo Zanetti.
On stage, you'll find a full ensemble: bandoneón, singers, dancers, and chamber musicians. The bandoneón is the heart of the soundāthe bellows-driven accordion that gives tango its signature breathāand it's paired here with operatic voices and a chamber group. The dancers bring the movement, and the whole thing is set against digital animation by visual artist James Templeton, which transforms the room into a world where tango's rhythms meet opera's storytelling. The program draws from Piazzolla, the Argentine composer who reinvented tango as nuevo tango, and Rodolfo Zanetti.
Tango Opera is part of ROCO's 22nd season, which opened with Eyes on the Horizon, two world-premiere commissions conducted by Artistic Partner Delyana Lazarova, and will close with Through the Looking Glass, conducted by Kensho Watanabe. This particular show sits in the middle of that run, bringing together the bandoneón, the singers, the dancers, and the digital art in one room.
