A spooky celebration of silent film and live music led by conductor and composer Andrew Earle Simpson, featuring original scores for The Phantom of the Opera and The Skeleton Dance.
ROCO brings Andrew Earle Simpson to The River Oaks Theatre on Friday, October 23, for ROCO Connections: From Silence to Sound, a one-night-only event that pairs silent film with live music. Simpson, a conductor and composer, leads a chamber ensemble playing original scores for two silent films: the 1925 The Phantom of the Opera and Disney's The Skeleton Dance. Between them, there's an entr'acte performance of Bohuslav Martinů's La revue de cuisine.
The night is part of the W.T. & Louise J. Moran Foundation Connections Series presented by ROCO, which pairs silent film with fresh scoring by a guest conductor and composer, reimagining early cinema in a format full of laughs, nostalgia and musical storytelling. The series takes audiences into new and unexpected places with site-specific collaborative chamber concerts that transform venues across Houston into intimate, immersive musical encounters, some curated by ROCO musicians themselves. It opened with ROCO Connections: Ali Jackson, featuring ROCO Principal Tuba Ali Jackson. This particular outing is billed as a spooky celebration of silent film and live music, and the series is sponsored by Texas Monthly.
