A chamber music concert by the Houston ensemble ROCO, featuring tuba soloist Ali Jackson, as part of their Connections series.
ROCO opens its new Connections series with Ali Jackson on tuba, Saturday, Oct. 10, at Parker Elementary School. It's a chamber concert that puts the tuba — the largest instrument in the orchestra's brass section — front and center. Jackson is joined by pianist Cat Schaefer and percussionist Craig Hauschildt.
The program runs from lyrical sonatas by Paul Hindemith, John Cheetham, and Gordon Jacob to a Caribbean Suite of Harry Belafonte songs arranged by Jackson himself, with steel drums rounding out the sound. The venue isn't accidental: Parker Elementary is a music magnet school celebrating its 50th anniversary, and the evening leans into that community spirit.
The Connections series is built on site-specific, collaborative chamber concerts that turn venues across Houston into intimate, immersive musical encounters, some of them curated by ROCO musicians. ROCO itself was founded in 2005 by oboist and Juilliard graduate Alecia Lawyer; the ensemble describes itself as "the most fun you can have with serious music" and has been called an "arts disrupter" for its mission to energize and personalize classical music.
