The Houston Symphony performs Maurice Ravel's ballet Daphnis and Chloe in its entirety across three performances at Jones Hall.
The Houston Symphony is bringing Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe to Jones Hall for three performances in May 2027. It's a big work, and they're playing it in its entirety across three different slots, so you can pick the one that fits your schedule best.
Daphnis and Chloe is one of those pieces that's hard to describe without using words like "dreamy" or "atmospheric." It's based on an ancient Greek tale, but Ravel filtered it through French Impressionism, and it's famous for two moments in particular: the "musical sunrise" and a wild, whirlwind finale. The symphony is performing the whole thing, and the full program runs about 100 minutes with a 20-minute intermission. It's a long evening, so it's worth knowing what you're getting into before you commit.
The Ravel isn't the only thing on the bill. The program also features Saint-Saëns' Cello Concerto No. 1, played by the symphony's principal cellist, Brinton Averil Smith, and the overture to The Wreckers by Smyth. Between the concerto and the overture, the Ravel takes up the bulk of the night.
