Stand-up comedy open mic night hosted by Jeff Joe at Axelrad Beer Garden.
Jeff Joe hosts Punchline Sundays at Axelrad on Sunday, October 11, from 8 PM to 11 PM. It's a comedy open mic, and Joe is the one running the night. If you've been around the Houston comedy scene, you might recognize the name—this is one of the legs of Axelrad's weekly Punchline Comedy night, which also runs every Monday and the first Friday of the month. So if Sunday doesn't work for you, there are a couple of other nights to catch it.
As an open mic, the room is built for comedians to get up and try out new material. That means you'll hear a mix of established local names and people just starting out, and the sets can range from polished bits to things being worked through for the first time. It's the kind of night where the room is as much a part of the experience as the people on stage.
The show is held in The Attic, the upstairs space at Axelrad. The venue itself has some history: it sits on the site of a former grocery store built by the Axelrad family in the early 1920s, and the current owners set out to carry on that tradition of being an open and welcoming place for everyone. Its expansive garden is as much of a draw as the room inside, with video art, film screenings, live music, and festivals. Axelrad bills itself as a home for local, regional, and international artists across a long list of genres—jazz, soul, and blues alongside Latin, indie, electronic, and experimental.
