National Chemistry Week celebration with hands-on chemistry activities, Hocus Pocus meet and greet, mad science shows and polymer experiments.
Potions, Brews and Ooze takes over the Children's Museum Houston on Sunday, October 18, from 9 AM to 5 PM. It's the kickoff for National Chemistry Week, which the American Chemistry Society leads with hands-on activities that show how science works in everyday life. The day is part of the museum's larger Halloween at the BOO!seum celebration, which runs from October 1 to 31 and turns the galleries into a month-long mix of eerie activities, interactives, and science experiments, with five candy stations for trick-or-treating throughout the museum.
The schedule is packed. The American Chemistry Society's hands-on activities run from 9 AM to 2 PM in the Kids' Hall Alcove, and from 10 AM to 2 PM, the sisters of Hocus Pocus roam the museum for a meet and greet. Mad Science puts on shows at 11 AM and 1 PM in the Brown Auditorium. BASF sponsors the Spooky Polymers sessions at 10:30 AM, 1 PM, and 3 PM in the Power Science Lab, where you can see how polymers behave using common household ingredients and take home a slimy, glowing creation. That one's recommended for ages 6 and up.

Beyond the scheduled sessions, there are all-day activities to hit whenever you have a gap: Fizzy Reactions at the Science Station, Peace Potion Jars in the Chevron Maker Annex, and a Mad Scientist Wig at the Kids' Hall activity table. Between the scheduled shows and the open stations, you can pretty much build your own day. The museum is at 1500 Binz St, Houston, TX 77004, and the whole thing runs from 9 AM to 5 PM.
