Irish singer-songwriters Pat Byrne and Gráinne Hunt perform originals and covers in a soulful, gritty style.
Pat Byrne plays McGonigel's Mucky Duck on Friday, November 20, with Gráinne Hunt joining him on the bill. Byrne is a native of Borris, Ireland, who settled in Texas drawn to the home of songwriting heroes like Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. He sings his own originals alongside choice covers in a soulful, gritty voice that critics have compared to the late Austin troubadour Jimmy LaFave. That comparison puts him closer to Glen Hansard or Luka Bloom than to strict traditionalists, even when he conjures an old-school feel on songs like "Hills of Killedmond," which features Irish fiddle legend Kevin Burke.
Gráinne Hunt is one of Ireland's most compelling vocalists and songwriters, compared to Tracy Chapman and Natalie Merchant and called "The Irish Joni" by Michael Londra. She's shared stages with Glen Hansard and U2 and opened for Gladys Knight and Mary Black. Together, they bring two distinct Irish voices to the same night.
