A multidisciplinary program featuring Indigenous and Native Heritage artists, talks, skill-shares, listening gatherings and performances, with a kid zone and childcare available.
DiverseWorks Gallery is hosting Šakotayišol Nunuš Constellation through October 24, part of the larger Overflow Radio project by Emily Johnson / Catalyst. The exhibition opened Saturday, October 3, from 5 to 9 PM, and it's free and open to the public.
To get the scale of it, you have to look at where this particular version fits. Overflow Radio is a project known for large-scale social choreographies that bring together performance, skill-shares, the planting of 1,000 trees, and radio transmissions across different territories. The world premiere in Mni Sóta Makoce (Minneapolis) streams twelve First Nations and Indigenous authors, poets, and scholars live over 24 non-consecutive hours. The Houston iteration, Šakotayišol Nunuš Constellation, is where the local audience gathers in person in Šakotayišol Nunuš—or Bear Creek Town—to listen to those broadcasts. The multidisciplinary program adds talks, skill-shares, listening gatherings, and performances to the mix, with a kid zone and childcare available on the opening day and during the listening sessions.
Six artists are exhibiting: Aveda Adara, Chiara 'Sunshine' Beaumont, Christie 'Chichi' Chafoya, Karen Navarro, Aryn Ward, and Monica Villarreal. The whole thing was developed in collaboration with Emily Johnson / Catalyst and local Indigenous and Native Heritage artists.
