A traditional New Year's Day organ recital featuring Valentina Huang on the Bach Organ, presented by the Bach Society Houston.
Valentina Huang takes the bench at Christ the King Lutheran Church on Friday, January 1, 2027, for the New Year's Day Organ Recital. It's a Houston tradition: the first music of the new year, played on the Bach Organ. Huang, a two-time national prize winner, handles the hour-long program on her own.
The recital is presented by Bach Society Houston, which has brought the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and composers in his tradition to a diverse and enthusiastic audience since 1981 through its professional Bach Choir. The society's focus on Bach runs through the whole season, and this recital fits right into that—Bach's name is on the organ itself, and the music follows the tradition the society has championed for over four decades.

It's a straightforward setup: one organist, one instrument, and an hour of music to start the year. If you've never seen a pipe organ recital in person, this is a good place to start—the sound fills the room in a way a recording can't quite capture. The recital runs from 6 PM to 7 PM at Christ the King's Rice Village Campus, 2353 Rice Boulevard, Houston, TX 77005. Admission is free, though you'll need to RSVP and donations are accepted.
