Contemporary dance show by MOMIX directed by Moses Pendleton, where dancers transform into living garden elements in a visual spectacle.
MOMIX brings Botanica to Jones Hall on June 18 and 19, 2027, as part of the Tudor Family Dance Series. The company is directed by Moses Pendleton, who co-founded Pilobolus before building MOMIX into its own thing—forty years of dancers becoming things dancers shouldn't be able to become.
In Botanica, the stage turns into a living terrarium. The dancers become humming wasps, glowing marigolds, and whole seasons, with athletic bodies and visual illusion doing the work of a garden. It's the kind of show where the human form is the raw material, shaped into images that don't look like people dancing so much as they look like something else entirely. The Philadelphia Inquirer called it "theater like this."
That's the thing about MOMIX: they've spent four decades pushing the body to do things it isn't supposed to. Pendleton's background with Pilobolus set the stage, and MOMIX has spent the years since refining that approach into its own distinct species. If you've seen them before, you know the drill—the focus is on the image and the illusion, and Botanica keeps that tradition going by turning the stage into a garden.
