Exhibition featuring the monumental mural Memoria/Memory by artist Rubio, created in collaboration with Vincent Valdez.
Memoria/Memory is on display at the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston's East End, and it's one of those things that stays up long enough that you can't really use the 'I ran out of time' excuse. It opened April 1, 2025, and runs through December 31, 2026, so you've got plenty of room to fit it into a weekend.
At its core, it's a monumental mural by the artist Rubio, created in collaboration with artist Vincent Valdez. The scale is part of the experience—it's a large-scale work that takes up a good deal of space, and it's tied directly to the exhibition Vincent Valdez: Just a Dream. If you're already heading over to see that show, this is the piece that anchors it.
There's a personal story behind it, too. Rubio dedicated the mural to Theresa Santana Valdez (1947–2020), Valdez's mother. The work features her favorite bird and her favorite flower, so it's a tribute as much as it is a public piece of art. Knowing that changes how you look at it—it's not just a large painting on a wall, but a specific gesture of memory for someone close to the people who made it.

Since it's part of the museum's ongoing programming, you can catch it any time between now and the end of 2026. It's located in the East End, and it's tied to the Vincent Valdez: Just a Dream exhibition, so you can see both in one trip. The mural stays on display through December 31, 2026.
