The Houston Symphony performs Mahler's Symphony No. 1 and Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5, 'Turkish', conducted by Juraj Valcucha with Stefan Jackiw on violin.
The Houston Symphony is bringing Mahler's Symphony No. 1 and Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5 to Jones Hall on Friday, June 4, and Saturday, June 5, 2027. There's also a livestream of the performance on Sunday, June 6. Both the Friday and Saturday shows start at 7:30 PM.
Music Director Juraj ValÄŤuha is on the podium for both. He describes Mahler's First as "towering, theatrical, and absolutely epic," and the way he frames it gives you a good sense of the arc: it carries the audience from a hushed, eerie opening through to the triumphant roar of the finale. It's a piece that earns its reputation for scale, and hearing it live is a different experience than listening on a record.
Sharing the bill is Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5, known as the "Turkish," with violinist Stefan Jackiw. The Washington Post called Jackiw's talent "off the scale," and having him take the lead on the Mozart provides a lighter, more focused contrast to the Mahler. The two works together make for a full evening—the concert runs about 110 minutes with a 20-minute intermission.
