Benefit concert featuring The Checkmates, a band from MD Anderson Cancer Center, supporting the Boot Walk against cancer.
The Checkmates are playing a benefit concert and mixer at Dan Electro's on Sunday, October 11, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The show is in support of the Boot Walk, which raises money for inflammatory breast cancer.
There's a specific Houston connection here: The Checkmates are the band from MD Anderson, the cancer center that's a major part of the city's medical landscape. Having them take the stage for a cause like this makes a lot of sense, and it puts the whole afternoon in a good light. The Boot Walk itself is a fundraiser for inflammatory breast cancer, a rare and aggressive form of the disease, so the money raised goes toward a cause that hits close to home for a lot of people.
The venue is Dan Electro's, located at 1031 E 24th St in North Heights. It's been a Houston neighborhood stage since 1988, when a Heights bungalow was converted into what the city now considers its most storied listening room. Over the years, the stage has hosted Greg Allman trading licks, Billy Gibbons slipping in unannounced, Stevie Ray Vaughan scorching the fretboard, and even Richard Gere grabbing a microphone. These days, the room still books a broad mix of Texas country, rock, blues, jazz, and indie, and it keeps a weekly open Music Jam & Mixer. It also stages shows with no cover to help grow and support Houston's music scene.

Since this is a benefit, it's as much about the cause as it is about the music. The Checkmates will be the main feature, and the whole thing runs from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Sunday, October 11, at Dan Electro's in North Heights.
