A celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month featuring Latin rhythms and jazz led by Houston native Leo Sandoval and the Jazz Houston All Stars.
Leo Sandoval and the Jazz Houston All Stars are playing two nights at the Hobby Center Performing Arts on Thursday, October 8, and Friday, October 9, both from 7:30 PM to 9 PM. The performances are part of Hispanic Heritage Month, and the set is built around Latin rhythms, jazz, and song.
Sandoval is a Houston native, an alumnus of the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and the Jazz Houston Youth Orchestra. He handles both the vocals and the guitar, and the music draws on both tradition and improvisation. He's joined by the Jazz Houston All Stars, and the evening moves between Latin American musical influences and jazz. The two nights are the same program, so you can pick whichever one fits your schedule better.
The shows take place in the Founders Club, inside the Hobby Center at 800 Bagby St. It's a smaller, listening-focused room rather than a big theater hall, which puts you closer to the music. Between the Latin rhythms and the jazz, the set is described as having warmth, energy, and a Houston spirit. If you've followed Sandoval's work or the Jazz Houston scene, this is a good chance to hear him lead a full band in a setting where you can actually hear the details.
