Texas troubadour John Evans Band performs live at McGonigel's Mucky Duck.
John Evans Band plays McGonigel's Mucky Duck on Saturday, October 17, starting at 6 PM. It's a single-bill night with Evans as the main feature, and he's coming in as a Texas troubadour with a songwriting legacy that goes back over twenty years.
If you haven't seen him before, there's a bit of a visual to it: Evans stands six-foot-five and dresses in polyester. He describes his sound as the love child of Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, and Elvis Costello—three names that place him squarely in the tradition of the singer-songwriter, with a lean toward the rootsy, melodic side of things. The Cash brings the steady, storytelling weight; Holly brings the early rock and roll hook; Costello brings the sharp, literate edge. It's a lineage that fits the troubadour label, and it's the one he's been working within for two decades.
He's currently embarking on a new album, and this show falls into that new chapter. Between the older songs he's built his reputation on and the new material he's working through, the set should give you a good sense of where he's been and where he's heading. The new record is the current focus, so you'll likely hear some of those songs out in the air before they're officially out.
