Encore presentation of a Time & Place talk tracing the history and enduring influence of Houston's six wards.
Preservation Houston is bringing back Houston's Six Wards for an encore session on Tuesday, October 13, at their PH Studio on 3907 Main Street. The talk is led by Jim Parsons, the organization's Programs and Communications Director, and it's a repeat of a previous Time & Place presentation that drew enough interest to warrant a second run.
Parsons traces the history of the city's six wards—the First, Third, and Fifth among them—from their start as 19th-century political districts to the neighborhoods and communities they helped shape. It's a look at how these early boundaries left a mark on the city long after they stopped serving a formal purpose. More than a century has passed since Houston officially abolished its ward system, yet those old names are still very much alive in the way people talk about the city. The session asks what happened when the system disappeared and why those names still mean so much to Houston today.
The talk is part of Preservation Houston's Time & Place series, which looks at the intersection of the city's built environment and its social history. This particular session is an encore, brought back after the original talk on the six wards hit a chord with the audience. Parsons, as the organization's Programs and Communications Director, is the one walking through the material.
