A festive farmland experience in Downtown Houston with over 45 pumpkin varieties, a 30-foot slide, carousel rides, hay maze, and boats on Kinder Lake.
Discovery Green is playing host to the Houston Pumpkin Festival, which runs from September 19 through November 8. It's a full-on pumpkin takeover of the park, with the downtown skyline as the backdrop. The organizers pitch it as a spot for family outings, date nights, and festive gatherings, and they describe the whole thing as "like Disneyworld, but with pumpkins."
There's a lot to walk through. More than 45 pumpkin varieties are on display, and the activities range from a 30-foot fun slide and a carousel to bumper boats and cruiser boats on the lake. You'll also find a giant corn pit, a hay maze, a sunflower walk, and a pumpkin church. It's the kind of setup where you can spend a few hours just drifting from one thing to the next.
The festival borders Kinder Lake and sits right next to Monument Au Fantôme, the modern-art piece by Jean Dubuffet that the Dan Duncan Family gave to the city. A portion of the ticket proceeds goes to the Discovery Green Conservancy, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit that looks after the park and puts on more than 500 free events a year.
