A two-day Mediterranean cultural festival featuring live music, folk dancing, food, shopping, and a guided church tour in West University.
The Houston Mediterranean Festival returns to St. George Orthodox Christian Church on Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24, from 11 AM to 10 PM both days. Most people around here know it as Med Fest, and it's exactly what it sounds like: two days of Mediterranean food, drinks, shopping, and music in West University.
There's a stage running all weekend with live music and dabke folk dancing. DJ Sawma holds down the day-to-day, and the evening slots fill in with Salem Omran at 7 PM on Friday, Nour Maghames at 6 PM on Saturday, and Jabour at 7 PM on Saturday. Chris Hawat plays both nights at 8:30 PM. If you've never seen dabke, it's a line dance that's a big part of the culture, and it's something you can watch or join in on.
Beyond the food and the stage, there's a guided tour of St. George Orthodox Christian Church. It's a good chance to see the iconography and architecture of a church that's been part of the West University community for over 60 years. There's also a silent auction, with the proceeds going toward a new Fellowship Activity Center. Head Priest Rev. Fr. James Shadid says the festival reflects the warmth and generosity of their faith and culture, and chairwoman Rana Abercia describes it as a chance to build connections and share Mediterranean culture with Houston.

Med Fest actually dates back to the early 1980s, though it was gone for years before coming back in 2023. It's grown since then: the 2024 edition was a one-day celebration that drew 5,000 people, and now it's a full two-day event. Presale tickets are $5. At the door, it's $5 before 5 PM and $10 after 5 PM, and children 4 and under are free with a paying adult. The church is at 5311 Mercer St, Houston, TX 77005.
