Piano recital by Hayato Sumino featuring works by Chopin, Saint-Saëns, Stravinsky and Thomas Adès alongside his own compositions and arrangements.
Hayato Sumino plays a solo piano recital at the Performing Arts Center on Monday, March 22, 2027. He's a Japanese pianist who's built a following around his recordings and his presence online, and this is one of his stops in Houston.
The program is a wide one, and it's not just the standard repertoire. He'll be playing Chopin, Saint-Saëns, Stravinsky, and Thomas Adès—four composers from very different eras and styles—and he's pairing them with his own compositions and arrangements. That last part is what sets this apart from a typical recital: you'll hear the established names alongside the music he's writing himself.
If you're not familiar with him, Sumino is known for his recordings of Chopin, but he's also spent a lot of time arranging and composing. Having his own work on the same program as Chopin and Stravinsky gives you a sense of where he's coming from as a musician, rather than just hearing him interpret other people's scores. It's a solo recital, so it's just him and the piano for the whole evening.
