An exhibition merging painting and photography to explore identity, memory and resilience through the works of Timoteo DomĂnguez Fuentes and Vladimir Frumin.
Havana: Where the Past Meets the Future is on view at the Cultural Center 'Our Texas' through October 31, 2026. The exhibition brings together two Houston artists from very different backgrounds—Cuban-American painter Timoteo DomĂnguez Fuentes and Russian-American photographer Vladimir Frumin—and lets their work sit side by side. It's part of the center's celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
DomĂnguez Fuentes works in figurative painting, and his pieces lean into migration, cultural identity, spirituality, and social resilience. He's shown at the YMCA and World Refugee Houston, left murals across Houston, CancĂşn, and Havana, and won the 'Panchito SimĂłn' Municipal Plastic Arts Competition in Cuba. Frumin, on the other hand, works in stark photography, focusing on neglected urban spaces and portraits of isolated individuals. His work has earned international recognition, including Sony World Photography Awards for Conceptual Art in 2016 and Portraits in 2023, and he's exhibited at Somerset House in London. He also received the 2016 Carol Crow Fellowship Award at the Houston Center for Photography for his documentary Everybody's 5th Ward.
Putting them in the same room creates a visual dialogue between painting and photography, and both artists circle back to identity, memory, and resilience. It's a pairing that works because they're looking at similar things from opposite ends of the room.
