Free community tour of the winning outfits from Fashion Fusion X, the tenth anniversary of the fashion design competition inspired by Frida Kahlo.
Fashion Fusion X is on display at the Houston Public Library – Central (Jesse H. Jones) on Saturday, October 17, in the first-floor gallery. It's a community tour showcasing the winning outfits from the tenth anniversary of Fashion Fusion, an annual competition and runway show presented by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) and the award-winning Fashion Design program at Houston City College (HCC).
This year's garments were designed by HCC students and alumni, all inspired by the MFAH exhibition Frida: The Making of an Icon, which looks at the life and legacy of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The entries were split into four competition categories—Regenerate, Reimagine, Reengineer, and Reveal—and the display brings together the winning outfits from each. If you've seen the Frida exhibition at the MFAH, this is a chance to see how those same images and themes were translated into clothing.
The work comes out of the HCC Fashion Design program, which trains students in design, construction, textiles, and patternmaking, with an emphasis on process, precision, and problem-solving. Seeing the winning pieces up close gives you a sense of that training in action—the way a garment is put together, the choice of fabric, and the technical work that goes into a finished look. It's a look at the student side of the city's fashion scene, rather than the polished runway version.
