ISKCON of Houston is celebrating Diwali on Monday, November 8, from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM. The evening runs through kirtan and aarti, a discourse, a candlelight aarti, and a prasadam feast.
Diwali, the 'Festival of Lights,' is a five-day holiday celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs in India and around the world. It marks the triumph of good over evil during the darkest night of the lunar month. The holiday commemorates Lord Ramachandra's return to Ayodhya: after Ravana kidnapped Sita and took her to Lanka, Rama and Lakshmana, aided by many monkey warriors, reached the southern tip of India, built a bridge across to Lanka, and killed Ravana—a victory remembered as Dussehra. Sita was then tested in fire and emerged pure, and the people of Ayodhya welcomed the Lord back by placing lamps on their rooftops and balconies.

The evening ceremony lights hundreds of candles throughout the temple and offers a special prasadam to the Deity. The temple describes itself as a spiritual oasis where guests can escape the city hustle for transcendental sound and beauty throughout the year. The program moves from kirtan and aarti into a discourse, then to the candlelight aarti, and closes with the prasadam feast. It runs from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM on Monday, November 8, at ISKCON of Houston.
