Celebrate the Festival of Lights with Hindi/English storytimes, dance performances, Bollywood dance experiences, and Diwali craft workshops at Children's Museum Houston.
Children's Museum Houston is celebrating Diwali on Thursday, November 5, with a full day of activities running from 9 AM to 5 PM. It's part of the museum's Hindu Heritage Month programming, and the whole thing is built around the traditions of the festival of lights—the storytimes, the dancing, and the art workshops all pull from there.
Diwali is one of India's most important holidays, celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains as the triumph of good over evil. The rituals center on light—festive lights, dancing, and the lighting of diya lamps—and the holiday can stretch across four or five days, falling on the darkest night of the lunar month. The museum's activities lean into that: the dance-a-longs, the storytimes, and the art workshops all reference the symbolism of light triumphing over darkness and the welcoming of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.
The scheduled programming starts with Hindi and English storytimes at 11 AM and 1 PM in the Parent Resource Library. Later in the day, Silambam Houston performs in the Brown Auditorium at 5:30 PM, followed by a Bollywood Dance Experience in the Gallery of Wonder at 6 PM. Diwali Craft Workshops run from 5:30 to 7:30 PM in Kaleidoscope. Throughout the day, there are ongoing crafts: Toran flower garlands in the Design Studio, and Kandil lanterns, chalk rangolis, and a Diya Lamp Banner over in Kaleidoscope. Fiddle Sticks is a partner on the celebration.
