Live dance and music by Danza Azteca Macuilxochitl and Nameless Sound, activating Nanibah Chacon's site-specific mural within the Radiant Geometries exhibition.
Danza Azteca Macuilxochitl will perform at the Moody Center for the Arts on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 3 to 5 PM. They'll be joined by Nameless Sound, the duo of musicians Laura Dykes and Aryn Ward, and together they'll be activating Nanibah Chacon's site-specific mural. It's a free event, open to the public.
The performance is part of Radiant Geometries: Vectors of Knowledge from the Indigenous Americas, which is on view at the Moody Center through Dec. 19. The exhibition brings together contemporary Indigenous and Latin American artists whose work looks at the connections between mathematics, science, technology, art, and Indigenous knowledge systems. It frames knowledge as a living technology that links the metaphysical with the land, waterways, and the living world, and it features paintings, sculptures, textiles, video works, and site-specific commissions by more than a dozen national and international artists. Among them are Nanibah Chacon, Eamon Ore-Giron, Patricia Domínguez, Kite and Cisco Merel, and Sara Flores, with associate curator Noor Alé framing the show around Indigenous ways of knowing.
Danza Azteca Macuilxochitl shares Indigenous Mesoamerican traditions through dance, music, ceremony, and oral knowledge, guided by ancestral teachings and by lineage-based relationships with teachers in Mexico. Their work here is tied directly to the exhibition, with the dance and music activating Chacon's mural in the same space. Joel Thompson, the Moody Center's deputy director, says the program advances the Center's mission to synthesize the university's academic resources with artists' creative insight.
