A Día de los Muertos celebration at the Houston Zoo featuring a traditional ofrenda for pets, craft stations, and seasonal decorations as part of the Zoo Boo autumn festival.
The Houston Zoo is celebrating Día de los Muertos on Sunday, November 1, and Monday, November 2. It's part of Zoo Boo, the zoo's month-long autumn celebration presented by King & Spalding, which runs throughout October and into early November.
At the center of the celebration is a traditional ofrenda built to honor the animals no longer with us. You're invited to bring a photograph of a cherished pet to place on the altar, or you can take it home afterward. There's also a craft station where you can draw or make artwork of your favorite animal. La Catrina, one of the most recognizable symbols of Día de los Muertos, appears on-site as well.
Because this is part of Zoo Boo, the celebration sits inside a larger seasonal setup. The zoo grounds are filled with pumpkins and autumn décor, including a Pumpkin Lantern Tunnel, a Peek-a-Boo Pumpkins display, and a Leaf Lantern Arch photo op along Autumn Avenue. The Houston Zoo itself dates back to 1922 and is a conservation and education nonprofit accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
