Austin-based indie-folk-Americana duo Dawn and Hawkes perform live at McGonigel's Mucky Duck in Houston.
Dawn and Hawkes play McGonigel's Mucky Duck on Saturday, November 7, starting at 6 PM. They're an Austin-based indie-folk-Americana duo: songwriter and guitarist Chris Hawkes and songwriter and singer Miranda Dawn. The two met in an Austin bar where a shared song sparked their partnership, and they've been working together as a pair ever since.
Critics have called their sound "transcendent alternative-folk" and "roots music" that blends blues, folk, country, and rock, carried by what's been described as their "tortured harmonies" and chemistry. That harmony is a good place to start if you're trying to pin them down—it's the core of what they do. They've put out three albums so far. Their debut, Golden Heart, reached No. 25 on Billboard's Folk chart and No. 2 on iTunes' singer-songwriter albums. Their second, Yours and Mine, earned praise from Acoustic Guitar for its "impeccable vocal harmonies and instrumentation."
Their third, The Other Side, came out in 2018 and blended folk-rock with themes of empathy, hope, and shared humanity—the Austin American-Statesman called it "instantly appealing." Over the years, they've been reviewed by Texas Monthly, Acoustic Guitar, Huffington Post, Houston Press, Austin Chronicle, and the Columbia Tribune. If you're coming from the folk or Americana side of things, you've probably seen their name pop up in one of those.
