Exhibition of papier-mâché animal sculptures by UK-based artist David Farrer at Hooks-Epstein Galleries, with an opening reception and artist talk.
David Farrer brings The Glass Menagerie to Hooks-Epstein Galleries starting Saturday, October 10, for his second show on this side of the Atlantic. The exhibition runs through November 21, and it's built around his papier-mâché animal sculptures.
Farrer was born in Leeds and raised in the village of Spofforth, and he studied Fine Art in Sunderland and at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, graduating in 1990. His work grew out of a lifelong appreciation for wildlife and the English countryside, and a period on safari in Africa that inspired animal sculptures that gently subvert the traditional hunting trophy, turning it into something playful yet contemplative. He also works with recycled materials, incorporating text and imagery into the finished pieces, and his subjects have since expanded beyond African wildlife to creatures from around the world.
He's exhibited internationally, with work in collections like Patek Philippe, Fortnum & Mason and Standard Chartered Bank, and known collectors among them novelist John Le Carré, the late Carrie Fisher and The Prodigy's Liam Howlett. He lives near Oxford, England. Hooks-Epstein Galleries, founded in 1969 by Geri Hooks, is one of Houston's longest-running galleries.
