A horror-comedy play by Austin Brady that explores themes of loneliness, loyalty and self-preservation through the supernatural secret of a bar owner.
The Company OnStage is running We Only Come Out at Night throughout October, a play written by local playwright Austin Brady and produced by special arrangement with him. It's a Houston story, set in a Houston bar run by co-owners Elizabeth and Benji. The plot kicks off when a chance encounter with three unsuspecting patrons reveals Elizabeth's supernatural secret, and the laugh-out-loud thriller turns into a surprisingly heartfelt look at loneliness, loyalty, and making the best of what life gives you.
Director Domenico Leona, who co-produced the show with his company The Phoenix Group, describes it as closer to B-horror and horror-comedy in the vein of Evil Dead. He says the production leans on diegetic sound and the actors' reactions rather than flashy special effects, so it's the kind of show that builds its tension through what you hear and how the characters react to it. Leona, a poet, actor, producer, and director, calls himself a "Houston theater nomad" and first met Brady while working at Main Street Theater. He frames the show's central theme as self-preservation: how much one is willing to sacrifice of body, morals, and beliefs to stay alive.
