A hip-hop reimagining of the classic Cinderella story, produced by the historic Ensemble Theatre at Miller Outdoor Theatre.
The Ensemble Theatre brings Cinderfella to Miller Outdoor Theatre on Tuesday, October 13, at 11 AM. It's a hip-hop reimagining of the Cinderella story, told through the rhythm, poetry, and pulse of hip-hop culture. The plot follows Dane, a gifted young dreamer weighed down by a cruel stepfamily, who gets his shot when a royal hip-hop ball is announced by Daddy Hip Hop and his daughter, the Princess of the rap game. With the help of a magical fairy godfather, fresh style, and the power of his own voice, he steps into a world of music, movement, and destiny.
The show draws on Dana Dane's 1985 song "Cinderfella," which runs as a recurring musical motif throughout. It's staged by Houston's historic Ensemble Theatre, founded in 1976 by the late George Hawkins to preserve African American artistic expression—a company currently celebrating its 50th anniversary. For this production, the company is joined by Carver High School theatre students, who perform alongside professional artists.
