Concert by Charlie Mars, a Mississippi-born singer-songwriter whose work blends country, folk and pop with rock, alternative and indie.
Charlie Mars plays McGonigel's Mucky Duck on Thursday, October 22, at 8:30 PM. He's a Mississippi-born singer-songwriter who pulls from country, folk, and pop, and mixes them with rock, alternative, and indie. Born in 1974 in Laurel, his family moved to Jackson when he was a senior in high school, where he fronted the band Adley Madidafus before heading to Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
It was in Dallas that he formed the Charlie Mars Band and put out three records in quick succession: Broken Arrow in 1995, Born & Razed in 1997, and End of Romance in 1999. Struggles with alcohol eventually led him to disband the group and seek a reset in Sweden in 2001. He returned to the U.S. and released a self-titled album in 2004, followed by the Texas Trilogy he produced with Billy Harvey: Like a Bird, Like a Plane in 2009, Blackberry Light in 2012, and Money in 2014. Along the way, he's played Austin City Limits and South by Southwest, and he was featured in Esquire Magazine's Songwriting Challenge.
