An intimate candlelit concert featuring a string quartet performing the greatest hits of Michael Jackson.
Candlelight brings a tribute to Michael Jackson to Resurrection Metropolitan Community Church on Friday, October 16. A string quartet takes on Jackson's greatest hits, and the whole thing happens under the glow of thousands of LED candles. It's part of the Candlelight series, which reimagines a wide range of music—everything from Coldplay and 90s hip-hop to Juan Gabriel—in some of Houston's most striking architectural spaces, like the Lone Star Flight Museum and Space Center Houston.
Resurrection Metropolitan Community Church, in the Heights, has been a welcoming home for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies for more than five decades. It dates back to 1972, when a small circle of believers first gathered in apartments and a converted bicycle shop, and was officially chartered in 1975. Part of the Metropolitan Community Church denomination, a progressive Christian movement founded to affirm LGBTQ+ people, the congregation has faced police harassment, hate group intimidation and natural disasters, and became a place of care and mourning at the height of the AIDS crisis. The sanctuary is noted for its superb acoustics, with wooden ceilings and plush carpets, and these concerts merge music, history and community.
