A hybrid course exploring the history of women-led community organizing, guided writing, and the documentary Rebel Bells, culminating in a creative or community-based project.
Building Power Together: The History of Community Organizing, Writing, Resilience kicks off at The Jung Center of Houston on Tuesday, October 13, and runs through November 10. It's a hybrid course, so you can join in person or from home, and it meets every Tuesday from 6 PM to 8 PM.
The program is built around the history of women-led community organizing. You'll spend the weeks looking at how women have organized for social change, and then you'll turn that outward look inward, reflecting on your own experiences. Part of that process involves the documentary Rebel Bells, which serves as one of the course's guiding texts. There's a guided writing component too, so you're not just listeningโyou're putting your own thoughts on paper as you go.
The organizers describe the goal as moving from that historical and personal reflection toward something practical. The idea is to develop a creative or community-based project inspired by empathy, collective action, and social change. So, you start with the history, move through your own story, and end with a project you can actually do.
