The Houston Symphony is bringing Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 and Vaughan Williams's Symphony No. 5 to Jones Hall over three performances: Friday, Jan. 8 at 7:30 PM, Saturday, Jan. 9 at 7:30 PM, and Sunday, Jan. 10 at 2:00 PM. Music Director Juraj ValÄuha leads the orchestra, with violinist Maria Ioudenitch taking the solo. The program opens with Elgar's Cockaigne Overture.
Bruch's concerto is one of the big staples of the violin repertoire, known for its rich melodies and showstopping excitement. It's paired here with Vaughan Williams's Symphony No. 5, which is described as being as meditative and restorative as a walk through the English countryside. The two sit on opposite ends of the mood spectrumāone a high-energy showcase, the other a slower, more reflective pieceāso the program covers a fair bit of ground in one sitting.
Maria Ioudenitch is a rising star who has won three international violin competitions, and this marks her Houston debut. She'll be joined on stage by guest violinist Fayez Sarofim. The whole thing is part of the Houston Symphony's 2026-27 season, which ValÄuha is leading as music director.
