An interdisciplinary dance-theater piece by Jasmine Hearn that recounts the researched history of the Buffalo Bayou through song, movement, sound, film and improvisation.
Jasmine Hearn brings Blue, Sable, Turning to MATCH Box 2 on Saturday, October 17, for its US premiere. It's an interdisciplinary dance-theater piece that pulls from a wide range of dance traditions to recount a researched history of the Buffalo Bayou, told through song, movement, embodied sound, film and improvisation. The work marks key moments of the river's past, including the 1836 Battle of San Jacinto, and is staged from the perspective of Sable Venus, a character Hearn carried over from her 2017 work Blue, Sable, and Burning.
Hearn is a three-time Bessie Award winner, having taken the honor in 2017 and 2021, and she's a 2023 Rome Prize Fellow in Design. She's also a 2025 researcher-in-residence at Rice University. On stage, she performs with a constellation of collaborators, braiding live sound, improvisation, choreography and storytelling into a single performance. The work is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.
