A nostalgic, bookish night out with a free adult book fair, literary-themed drinks, and a DJ at Social Beer Garden in Midtown.
Beyond the Covers is bringing its adult book fair back to Social Beer Garden in Midtown on Friday, October 9, from 6 PM to 10 PM. This is the third volume of the series, and it's timed for Banned Books Week.
If you grew up with those Scholastic book fair catalogs—the ones that arrived in a plastic bag and made you spend your allowance on a poster or a fancy notebook—you'll recognize the inspiration here. The fair takes that same format and turns it into a night out for adults. Local bookstores and authors set up shop side by side, so you can browse through stacks of books and talk to the people who wrote them in the same room.
It's not just about the books, though. The evening includes literary-themed cocktails and mocktails, a DJ spinning nostalgic tunes, giveaways, and brand activations. The whole thing is put on by Beyond the Covers, a mobile bookshop that runs bookish events across Houston and the surrounding area, from author signings and hobby meetups to game nights.

Proceeds from the night benefit the Texas Freedom to Read Project. It's free to get in—no cover—so you can drop by for a drink and a few books without spending much to start. The fair runs from 6 PM to 10 PM at Social Beer Garden HTX, 3101 San Jacinto St, Houston, TX 77004.
