The Houston Symphony performs Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 with pianist Garrick Ohlsson and Music Director Juraj ValÄuha, part of the Margaret Alkek Williams Spotlight Series.
The Houston Symphony is bringing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 to Jones Hall over three dates: Friday, May 28, Saturday, May 29, and Sunday, May 30, 2027. The Friday and Saturday shows start at 7:30 PM, and the Sunday matinee is at 2:00 PM. Pianist Garrick Ohlsson takes the solo part, with Music Director Juraj ValÄuha conducting.
The program pairs the Beethoven concerto with Hans Rott's Symphony No. 1. The concerto comes from Beethoven's early years, when he was still known as one of the preeminent piano virtuosos of his day and wrote with his own playing in mind. Rott, on the other hand, died at 25 and left behind a symphony of groundbreaking scope and fearless innovation; Gustav Mahler called him the founder of the new symphony as he understood it. Hearing the two together puts a young Beethoven alongside a composer who barely got to start.
This is part of the Houston Symphony's Margaret Alkek Williams Spotlight Series, which puts Music Director Juraj ValÄuha on stage with guest conductors and renowned artists, pairing canonical names like Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, and Stravinsky with contemporary works. This particular pairing fits that pattern, putting a familiar name like Beethoven next to Rott.
