A classical concert featuring mandolin virtuoso Avi Avital and accordion virtuoso Ksenija Sidorova performing a programme of dances by Bartók, Falla, Prokofiev and others.
Avi Avital and Ksenija Sidorova are playing together at the Cullen Theater in the Wortham Center on Tuesday, March 16, 2027. The concert is titled Dances for Mandolin & Accordion, and it's presented as part of the Admiral Transfer Music Series.
The program is built around dances, and it takes those two instruments through a wide range of composers. They'll be playing works by Kreisler, Mozart, Stravinsky, Bartók, Prokofiev, Saint-Saëns, Falla, and Villa-Lobos. That's a lot of ground to cover in one night, and the order takes them from Bartók's Romania to Falla's Spain.
It's an unusual pairing on a stage. Avi Avital is a mandolin soloist who's widely credited with bringing the instrument back into the concert hall; he was the first mandolin soloist ever nominated for a classical Grammy. Ksenija Sidorova has done something similar for the classical accordion. Both are known as virtuosos who've spent their careers pushing their respective instruments into spaces they aren't usually associated with, so seeing them share a stage makes a certain kind of sense.
