Author talk with Khiara M. Bridges, moderated conversation, audience Q&A, and book signing, followed by a community art activation.
Khiara M. Bridges will be at Kindred Stories on Thursday, October 29, to talk about her book Expecting Inequity. The evening starts with a moderated conversation about the book, followed by an audience Q&A and a book signing. After that, there's a community art activation led by The Call Me Mother Experience.
Bridges is the Earl Warren Professor of Public Law at UC Berkeley School of Law and a leading expert on the intersection of race, class, and reproductive rights. Expecting Inequity comes from two years of participant observation at a San Francisco obstetrics clinic that caters to the affluent. From that work, she argues that racial disparities in maternal mortality persist even across income levels: wealthier Black people are far more likely to die during pregnancy, childbirth, or the postpartum period than their white counterparts. It's a heavy subject, and the book looks at it from the inside of a high-end clinic rather than from the margins.
This isn't her first book on the subject. She also wrote Reproducing Race: An Ethnography of Pregnancy as a Site of Racialization, Critical Race Theory, and The Poverty of Privacy Rights. If you've followed her work on reproductive rights and racialization, this is a chance to hear her walk through the specific findings of Expecting Inequity in person.
