Author talk celebrating the release of 'Bringing Wreck' with Omise'eke Natasha Tinsley at Kindred Stories.
Omise'eke Natasha Tinsley is coming to Kindred Stories on Sunday, October 18, for a talk celebrating the release of Bringing Wreck: Megan Thee Stallion, Monica Roberts, and Other Houston Hurricanes. Tinsley is a professor and chair of Black Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and she describes the book as a Houston love story between two women who never met in the flesh.
Both women grew up in Houston's South Park neighborhood and graduated from Houston-area colleges—Monica from the University of Houston and Megan from Texas Southern University. The book looks at how Megan Thee Stallion inspired Black women and femmes like the late Monica Roberts, a Houston journalist, community historian, and trans activist who ran the blog TransGriot. Even though they never met, Tinsley argues their work has pushed Black LGBTQ+ activists to love, resist violence, and speak truth to power.
The cover was commissioned from collage artist Mariah Webber, who pulled from everyday Houston iconography—horses, storms, and slabs—and added a wide-open mouth to represent Megan. The title itself is a nod to local hip-hop history and to the idea of disruption.
