Closing-night concert of the Adventurous Electric Guitar Festival featuring improvisational guitar performances by Kelly Doyle, Brad Allen Williams, and Aurum Son.
The Adventurous Electric Guitar Festival wraps up tonight, Friday, October 9, with a closing-night concert at Dan Electro's Guitar Bar. It's the finale of a two-day run that brought together guitarists, composers, technologists and students for performances, talks and demonstrations. The whole thing is about new directions in electric guitar—improvisation, composition, signal processing and music technology. The closing night itself is a concert of improvisational guitar performances featuring Brad Allen Williams, Kelly Doyle and Aurum Son.
To get how the night fits in, it helps to see the full scope of the festival. It kicked off Thursday with an opening concert at the Wortham Theatre at Alice Pratt Brown Hall, followed by morning panels on Friday. Across those two days, the lineup included Chapman Welch, Thomas Helton, Sandy Ewen, Kevin Patton, DOUBLEMONO (Drew Farrar and Fiona Xue Ju), Asher Lurie, Aisling Ma, Kelly Doyle, Brad Allen Williams, Christopher Trapani, Peter McCulloch and Aurum Son. The festival was founded by guitarist Chapman Welch, an electroacoustic specialist at REMLABS and winner of the 2019 Texas Flatpicking Championship, and composer Christopher Trapani, a New Orleans native who studied with Bernard Rands at Harvard, earned his doctorate from Columbia in 2017 and was a 2019 Guggenheim Fellow. The program is presented with support from Rice University's Creative Ventures Fund, Rice Electroacoustic Music Labs (REMLABS) and the Shepherd School of Music.

While the daytime events took place at Rice, the closing night moves to Dan Electro's, one of Houston's longstanding live-music venues. The concert starts at 8 PM and is pay-what-you-want, with a $10 suggested donation. If you've been following the festival since Thursday, this is the final stop.
