Open Dance Project presents a whimsical dance theatre adaptation of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, featuring aerial silks, acrobatics and spoken narration.
Open Dance Project brings A Midsummer Night's Dream to Miller Outdoor Theatre on Friday, November 13, at 7:30 PM. It's a 90-minute production from the Houston-based ensemble, and it's not your usual ballet. Instead of a traditional dance company approach, they're staging the play with aerial silks, acrobatics, and spoken narration, so you'll hear the story as much as you see it.
The plot follows Hermia as she flees her overbearing father and ends up in a forest full of lovers, a feuding Fairy King and Queen, a mischievous sprite, and a troupe of amateur actors. The production features a whimsical score by Two Star Symphony's Kirk Suddreath and John Duboise, with fairy creations by Afsaneh Aayani and Sasha Blaschka. The company's pre-professional youth ensemble, ODP2, also makes guest appearances throughout the show.
Open Dance Project describes itself as an ensemble-driven dance theater company dedicated to dance theater and community programming. This production fits that description: the combination of aerial work, acrobatics, and spoken word puts it closer to physical theater than a classical dance performance. If you can't make it in person, the show is livestreamed on the theater's website, YouTube, and Facebook.
