23rd annual IgboFest celebrating West African Igbo culture with dancers, folklore, fashion parade, games and authentic African food.
IgboFest Houston returns to Discovery Green on Saturday, October 24, for its 23rd annual celebration of West African Igbo culture. It's a full day of dance, folklore, and education, open to all ages. The festival is presented by the Ndi-Ichie Cultural Association and run through its youth wing, the Ndi Ichie Youth Cultural Foundation, which also stages a range of community events.
The day is built around a series of performances that start with the Ndi Ichie Processional at 2 PM, followed by the OKOSO Dance Troupe at 3 PM and the Igbo Catholic Youth show at 5 PM. The programming mixes high-energy cultural dances and folklore with an educational twist, a fashion parade, games, and authentic African food. The organizers also run a youth wing aimed at children and young adults, so it's as much for families as it is for anyone coming to learn about the culture.
IgboFest has been a Houston fixture for over 15 years, drawing performers from across the United States—from Chicago to New Orleans—as well as from Nigeria. The group numbers range from traditional to acrobatic, and the festival features masquerades from Igboland. It's a chance to see West African culture celebrated in the middle of the city, with the day moving from the processional through the dance troupes and into the food and games.
