Community celebration of Latin American folk art traditions with art activities, ofrendas exhibition, vendors, and performances.
MECA is hosting its annual Dia De Muertos Festival on October 31 and November 1, 2026, at its campus at the Historic Dow School, 1900 Kane St, in Houston's Old Sixth Ward. The two-day festival is the culmination of a month-long program of festivities that includes altar exhibitions and community workshops.
On the festival days, the campus fills with children's art activities, an ofrendas exhibition, artist and artisan vendors, festival foods, and three performance stages. The ofrendas—the altars that anchor the whole tradition—are dressed in marigolds, papel picado, food, and Christian saints.
For those who aren't familiar, DĂa de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican festivity and Latin American tradition observed every year on November 1 and 2. It brings together pre-Columbian heritage and Catholic influence into a celebration that honors the souls of the dead through music, dance, theatre, visual art, and altars. MECA's celebration has grown into a month-long program, with the two-day festival serving as the finale.
