Tuesday Night Tunes: The Country Classics

The Country Classics play the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic on Tuesday 28 July, from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. It's part of Tuesday Night Tunes, the museum's live-music series that's now in its 11th year. The series runs on free Tuesday evenings from 4 pm to 8 pm as part of the summer vibe on Halifax's waterfront, so this is one of the scheduled sets in that window.

The set is described as a musical journey through decades of country music, and the trio behind it is Larry Bjornson on guitar, Shimon Walt on cello, and John Ebata on piano. It's an unusual combination for country — you don't usually see a cello and a piano leading the way — and that's where the evening gets its particular shape. The cello and piano bring a different weight to the songs, and the guitar holds the line, so the country classics are played with a chamber feel rather than a honky-tonk one.

If you're planning to go, the museum is at 1675 Lower Water Street. The music is usually outdoors in the anchor yard, but if the weather turns, they move it inside to the Small Craft Gallery. It's free to attend, so you can just drop in. While you're there, the museum is collecting monetary or non-perishable donations at the admissions area for Feed Nova Scotia, a local initiative working to curb food insecurity, so it's a good time to bring along a few tins or a couple of dollars if you can.
