Roxy & The Underground Soul Sound are playing The Carleton on Friday, October 30, with a set that celebrates 20 years of Amy Winehouse's Back to Black. It's a soul-funk tribute to the album that earned multiple Grammy Awards, so the night is built around that record rather than a general career retrospective. If you've spent any time with Back to Black, you know the songs—the brassy, old-school soul sound that Winehouse brought back into the pop charts—and that's what this show is aiming for.
For those who haven't come across them, Roxy & The Underground Soul Sound (T.U.S.S.) are a six-piece soul-funk band from right here in Halifax. They're fronted by Roxy Mercier on vocals, and the rest of the line-up is built for a big, horn-heavy sound: Andrew Jackson on trombone, James Shaw on saxophone, Pat Healy on guitar, Luke Arsenault on bass, and Brendan Melchin on drums. With a full horn section in the mix, they've got the right tools to handle the brassy arrangements that defined the album.
They've been playing together since 2013 and have spent the years since touring across Canada. Along the way, they've appeared at the Halifax Jazz Festival, the Harvest Music Festival, the Stan Rogers Folk Festival, The Jubilee, and Cloggeroo. They've also shared stages with a wide range of names—Chaka Khan, Fefe Dobson, The Arkells, Matthew Good, Steve Earle, Matt Minglewood, The Trews, and Joel Plaskett. It's a local band that's put in a fair amount of work on the road.
