Patouche Collective celebrates its debut album release with an opening performance by Cape Breton singer-songwriter Dane Pedersen.
Patouche Collective are playing The Carleton on Sunday, August 23, to celebrate the release of their debut self-titled album, which came out this month. It's a Cape Breton ensemble that grew out of the partnership between award-winning guitarist and composer Maxim Cormier and his father, Gervais Cormier, who expanded their traditional collaboration into a wider collective. The full line-up on stage will be Maxim and Gervais Cormier, Malcolm MacNeil, Ben Smith, Amelia Parker, and Ed Wordsworth.
The album draws on Scottish, Acadian, and other Cape Breton influences, and it pushes beyond the piano-led accompaniment often associated with the region. The name Patouche comes from the nickname of Maxim's great-great-grandmother, Elizabeth Muise, of the Acadian community of Chéticamp.
Opening the night is Dane Pedersen, a Cape Breton singer-songwriter working in the contemporary Canadian folk tradition. 2026 has been a big year for him: he won both the Mariposa Folk Festival Emerging Artist Showcase and the Robinson Emerging Artist Showcase at the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival. He's also played the Stan Rogers Folk Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Mariposa Folk Festival, Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival, and Celtic Colours International Festival.
