A dance work combining Kathak and Bharatha Natyam, with original music by Bageshree Vaze and Vineet Vyas, and a video narrative.
Bageshree Vaze brings Paratopias to the Dalhousie Arts Centre – Sir James Dunn Theatre on Friday, October 2, a dance work that puts her at the centre of everything: she choreographed it, she performs it, and she wrote the music. It's a crossover that pulls from two distinct Indian classical traditions—the rhythmic language of Kathak and Tabla, and the aesthetics of Bharatha Natyam—and weaves them together into a single piece.
There's a personal thread running through it, too. Vaze describes the work as an homage to the St. John's Hindu Temple, the place where she first discovered Indian dance. That connection to a specific community and a specific beginning gives the whole thing a bit more to hold onto than just the technical side of the choreography.
The music is original, composed by Vaze herself with Vineet Vyas, and the performance is accompanied by a video narrative that runs alongside the dance. Between the two classical styles, the original score, and the video, there's a fair amount of ground being covered in one evening.
